Where to seek IP advice from…my top 5 tips!

Where do I go for IP advice for my startup?

In my experience many aspiring entrepreneurs simply don’t have the funds to obtain advice from an IP lawyer particularly early on in their startup journey when their business idea is not fully developed.

Ironically however, this is when most budding entrepreneurs that I have spoken to, would welcome with open arms some informal advice and guidance relating to their IP.

If you’re in this ‘catch 22’ position, then why not try the following sources of IP advice?

#1. Your local university. Give them a call and say you are a startup looking for IP advice. Chances are that you will be put through to the Business Faculty or an academic with experience of IP.

#2. Your national Intellectual Property Office or failing this, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Visit their respective websites. You’ll find numerous downloadable guides on all aspects of IP written on the whole in plain English.

#3. Industry bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys. Visit their websites and you will find a list of accredited advisors some of whom may well offer an initial meeting for free.

#4. Ask your mentor (if you have one). He or she may well put you in touch with someone in their network who could assist you.

#5. Social Media. Do a search on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and even LinkedIn. Use search terms such as ‘IP advice’ or ‘startupIP’; you may find someone that you can direct message.

Hope this helps!
