Make the most of any meeting you have with an IP professional by asking the following 3 questions!

As an aspiring entrepreneur money is tight. So make the most of any meeting you have with an IP professional by asking the following 3 questions!

#1. Is my business idea protectable? If so how?

#2. Given that my budget is limited, is there any way I can protect my business idea without spending £1000s on various intellectual property rights?

#3. If you were in my position, what should I focus on next in terms of developing my idea?

The great thing about these questions is that they are open-ended and therefore facilitate a productive discussion about your startup idea with someone presumably who has experience of advising people in circumstances similar to yours.

For me, question #2 is perhaps the most crucial for you. Why? Well the conventional methods of protecting IP (e.g. trade marks and patents) may well be cost prohibitive and time consuming for you to pursue as a startup. So by asking whether there are alternative methods of protection, not only will you hopefully save money and get at least some modicum of protection for your idea, but you will also ensure that your IP advisor has really thought through your business idea and therefore provided you with advice which you can act upon immediately; win win!!
